How Polestar is breaking with convention – according to the woman in charge

Despite only arriving in Australia in 2022 with a single model, Polestar cars have proliferated on local roads. So how has the brand grown so much, so fast? We ask Polestar Australia’s Managing Director, Samantha Johnson.


On a special episode of The Drive Podcast in celebration of last month’s International Women’s Day, we caught up with Samantha Johnson, Polestar Australia’s Managing Director, about how the brand is smashing misconceptions, overhauling the ownership experience and revolutionising sustainability.


Susannah Guthrie: I have the good fortune today of being joined by Samantha Johnson, Managing Director of Polestar Australia. Samantha, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me on International Women’s Day. In my extensive research of all things about you, I learned some very interesting facts, including that you have previously worked at Harley-Davidson, you’ve lived and worked in Hong Kong, and you seem to have a passion for some very complicated water sports that I personally find incredibly intimidating and impressive. For those who are unfamiliar with your career trajectory, could you tell us a little bit about how you came to be at Polestar Australia?

Samantha Johnson: I’d be delighted to! As you said, I’ve worked at Harley-Davidson for 10 years and started there as a finance lead, or CFO [Chief Financial Officer]. We took over the distributorship from independent dealer groups, so it was really a startup, and we built the organisation.

I had to learn everything about the business, and eventually I ended up getting promoted into the sales director role, looking after the dealership network’s profitability and performance. That was very exciting. You really got to go into different organisations and look at how you could help them to improve. You just learned so much about commerce, our consumer experience, and how to really optimise that consumer experience, so great learnings.

From that, I went on to Volvo, and I started there as their business controller, or CFO, and started up their retail finance and insurance team. They were starting on that digital transformation journey, so I’d worked on a couple of digital feasibility projects within Volvo. I hired the first person to start off on this digital transformation journey and run the future projects.

Then Polestar came along, and it was this performance arm of Volvo. I had, in the past, driven the Volvo Polestar vehicles, and that was so exciting, like bright blue, really loud, and really high performance. They’re just so thrilling.

When Polestar started to look at coming to the market in Australia, I was helping them with some of the work, understanding the local market, how to set up, and a few other things. When the opportunity came along to bring on an MD for Polestar, I very quickly put my hand up and said I’d love to take on this journey. I love the vehicles, and now they’re very different. They’re quite sophisticated, sustainable, so it’s a very exciting brand to be part of. It’s been a fantastic couple of years.

SG: What’s an element of your day-to-day job that people might find surprising?

SJ: I think people think you’re a leader of an auto company and that’s what you do. But it’s actually so much more than that. I think the industry is changing so much. Electric vehicles are all about sustainability. It’s also about inclusion and being ethical as well.

So I’m at a lot of events, I’m talking to a lot of sustainability partners about not just electrification, but how can we lower emissions? How can we make sure there’s more circularity in not just what we are building as a brand and the use phase, but also, how can we make sure that we are looking after things at the end of life so there’s less scrapping? So I do a lot of education, a lot of discussions, a lot of partnerships, on top of the day-to-day running an auto brand.

SG: Do you think that there’s a ‘secret sauce’ for success in the Australian automotive industry?

SJ: I think so because I’ve seen what the past looks like. And I’ve always said, if I had the chance to run an organisation, I want it to be different. And Polestar is very different. It’s a different business model, so there are no biases. It’s an online digital e-commerce journey. There is no bias as to gender, who’s the decision-maker, if you are wealthy or not wealthy, what kind of watch you’re wearing, there’s no biases there, so everyone is treated fairly.

You can come into any of our retail locations, and we will tell you everything about the brand and the products, but we don’t assume who you are. Whether you are the decision-maker because you are the man or you are the woman, or because you’re wearing a certain outfit, it’s really about being more inclusive and not having those biases, but it’s also about innovation.

I think [it’s about] innovating the business model and how you do things, and also making sure that you are bringing people into your organisation and surrounding yourself with people who live by those ethical values as well. Removing some of the behaviours that I’ve seen in past companies and industries across the globe to get things where they should be and [to get to] how I want to see the future.

SG: I hadn’t actually considered that having a really digital-focused business and dealership approach removes those inherent biases that you see sometimes walking into a really traditional dealership. It’s also a non-intimidating space for people who might be new to buying cars or unfamiliar with the brand. It’s geared towards learning and educating yourself, I think, which is a really nice thing. And certainly less scary for people coming in to buy their first electric vehicle, which is a bit of a hurdle to overcome.

SJ: It is. It’s about education. People don’t know how to start that journey, so you’re trying to help them. [They’re] just not worrying about going into somewhere and not knowing what you’re going to be paying. How do I have to act so that I’m not going to get ripped off? Those things. No one’s judging you. You’re going to get the same price as everyone else.

SG: Obviously, you’ve had a fair bit of on-the-ground experience… you’re dealing with the dealerships and the sales side of things. I think we’re often quick to, I suppose, stereotype Australian buyers. ‘They love utes’. We tend to have a higher proportion of people who drive diesel cars than other areas in the world. I’m wondering if you feel there are any misconceptions, say, about Australian buyers that maybe need some updating or changing in 2023?

SJ: I think, definitely, the man is not the decision-maker. It can be anyone. We do need to be more inclusive, definitely. When you see these cars that have been out on the road, the four-by-fours and the diesels, a lot of people buy their cars because of their lifestyle, but also, there can be tax incentives that push people into a certain vehicle type.

That’s where, with the National Electric Vehicle Strategy, with the policies that we are hoping come down the line, we’ll really look at the supply infrastructure and the consumer side of really increasing more sustainable mobility in Australia and pushing people more towards electrification than the fossil fuel vehicles. There’s still a lot to be put in place now, but you can see every day it’s happening. So having that confidence for consumers now to go in and buy an electric vehicle and know that it’s the right car for them now. Not for the future, but now.

SG: Now, I’m keen to go back to a personal level. One of the things that comes up a lot for me personally is that people always say to me, “Oh, you’re in automotive. Is that an inherently blokey industry?”. It’s traditionally been very male-dominated. But I wondered is that something that has come up for you, or have you found the complete opposite?

SJ: I have found that I’ve had experiences myself, and also, I’ve had many of my women co-workers in my office in tears because of some way that they’ve been treated or things that are unfair. They’re not being listened to. It’s quite frustrating.

That’s where I love at Polestar that it’s a totally new way of working. The whole e-commerce, no biases. The people I’ve brought on board at Polestar, it doesn’t matter what your background is, gender-wise, race, religion, whatever.

What I loved about it was the innovation, the fairness, and the ability to start an organisation that moves away from those behaviours that I’ve seen in the past, within and external to the industry, and just a clean slate. This is the way I want to see things go forward, inclusive for our employees, inclusive for our customers, and inclusive in our supply chains.

We’re even using blockchain in some of our risk mineral areas and letters to make sure that we can trace if there’s any cruelty to animals or if there are any welfare, human rights abuses. That’s really important for us, and we’ll be doing that more and more as we are able to because I think that’s really important.

The more that companies hold their supply chain to account for sustainable and ethical sourcing, the more companies that can’t survive unless they’re acting in those ways. I think it’s up to big corporates to really set the scene of what’s acceptable and what the future needs to look like, and really making sure that we are making a difference and spreading that way of working.

SG: I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had those experiences. As a woman, it’s strangely heartening to hear that someone in your position and someone I admire has had those experiences as well… that it’s not just me. But it’s also fantastic to hear that there’s change. I’m also curious to know, from an industry level on a whole and not just at Polestar, do you feel like there’s been enough change in terms of the gender split and the gender neutrality movement and making people feel at home and welcome? Do you think we’ve seen enough change, and do you think there’s still a lot more to do?

SJ: I think there has been change. There’s a lot more women in leadership, a lot more women out in the dealership world as well, and all being very successful as well. But I think it’s a tough journey for them still.

I think there needs to be a lot more cultural shift and not protecting the old ways of doing things. Companies all have their codes of conduct. They all have policies around how we should be behaving, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how people behave on the ground. I think these new ways of working, digital ways of working, innovative ways of working, are helping to move that a lot faster than it has been.

But there is a shift. It is changing. And the more women that are in leadership roles, the fairer the treatment’s going to be. But there’s still a tough journey for quite a lot [of people].

SG: I think you’re right, and I think it’s exciting to be speaking to someone like yourself who is in a leadership role. It’s just positive modelling as well, for young women. I think everyone has their opinions on how we can fix the, I suppose, inherent gender imbalance in the automotive space and in all industries really. What do you think are some of the ways we can improve this going forward?

SJ: I think people think of the auto industry traditionally, but there is so much going on in sustainable innovation and how we are designing cars, designing batteries, and the circularity in what we build. There’s a lot of high-tech, really exciting work with connected cars. But I don’t think there is enough awareness of that in high schools and universities as to these roles that are available in this work that’s coming up.

There is so much there, but it’s letting them know about that, and giving them that awareness of the jobs they don’t even know are available yet. How do we get that education out to schools as well, so that people drive towards these really innovative industries and give them that inspiration?

SG: I think there’s a stereotype that in order to be in automotive, you have to be the one getting your hands dirty under the bonnet, and that’s no longer the case. Now, you can design the materials used in sustainable cars and the seat finishes. You can be thinking of ways to connect them to your phone.

There are so many layers now and so many elements that go into these cars, particularly electric cars, that I don’t even know about, let alone a 15-year-old in a high school. We’ve got so much to learn in that space in terms of opportunity, which is exciting, but we just have to do the work and let people know, I suppose. This is the 2024 Ferrari SF90 Versione Speciale before you’re meant to see it

Spy photos have revealed Ferrari’s newest special edition supercar before its formal debut, showing off major changes to the bodywork – all in the name of performance.

The 2024 Ferrari SF90 Versione Speciale has been caught on camera undisguised ahead of the model’s imminent unveiling.

The images – photographed and published on Instagram by ProDriverCZ – reveal Ferrari’s next limited-edition supercar, based on the plug-in hybrid SF90 Stradale.

Translated as ‘special version’, the Versione Speciale is often the name given to Ferrari’s limited-edition models before a name is announced.

While the name has yet to be confirmed by Ferrari, the new SF90 variant has received significant body changes designed to improve aerodynamics.

An extended front splitter, air ducts in the bonnet, air vents around the wheel arches, a new rear diffuser, and a large fixed rear spoiler are said to help increase downforce and direct air for better cooling.

The Ferrari SF90 VS also appears to have a full-width light bar, replacing the square-shaped tail-lights on the standard Stradale.

The Stradale is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 combined with a plug-in hybrid system, utilising three electric motors – one for each front wheel and another at the rear – to produce a combined output of 735kW and 800Nm.

Specifications of the Ferrari SF90 VS will come later, but expect its performance figures to be deliver a noticeable improvement, while weight saving techniques are expected be applied throughout the body and interior.

The 2024 Ferrari SF90 VS will be unveiled in the coming weeks or months, with the model to almost certainly to exceed the Stradale’s price of $846,888 before on-road costs – if it’s offered to the Australian market.

Subaru transforms leftover airbag fabric into shopping bags

Is this the safest way to carry groceries home from the supermarket? Left-over sheets of the airbag fabric used in new Subaru cars have been turned into shopping bags in Japan.

Japanese car-maker Subaru has repurposed offcuts from the production of airbags into reusable shopping bags – and if you live in Japan, you can buy one.

The shopping bags are sold on Subaru’s Japanese online store, but are produced by Toyoda Gosei – a Japanese manufacturer of automotive parts, which is part-owned by Toyota, but also supplies components for Subaru cars.

They are priced from 2750 yen ($AU31); Subaru says delivery is only available to addresses within Japan.

Subaru says the supermarket bags are produced from “unused fabric that was supposed to be installed as an airbag in a car,” and are available with blue or pink accents, and reflective stripes on the handles.

They are said to measure 550mm tall, 340mm wide and 120mm deep, and be large enough to carry a towel.

The Subaru-branded bags are part of a broader range of recycled airbag-derived products made by Toyoda Gosei, including ‘tote’ bags made from dyed airbag off-cuts, with seatbelts used as the handles.

The company also sells wallets made from leather destined for car steering wheels, and last year used airbag offcuts to create a pair of running shoes.

Toyota Hilux 6×6 fire engine responds to carpark fires in Europe

Large fire trucks can’t access multi-story or underground carparks, but this six-wheeled Toyota HiLux can.

Car fires are nothing new, but the increase in higher density developments – and the rollout of electric-vehicle charge points in multi-story and underground carparks – means traditional fire-fighting equipment can’t respond to hard-to-reach locations.

Bring on the Toyota HiLux 6×6 Hiload fire and rescue vehicle created in the UK by Prospeed Motorsport, an engineering and fabrication business that developed a six-wheel chassis extension for the current-generation Toyota Hilux.

Refered to as Hiload, the 6×6 chassis stretches the Toyota HiLux by 1230mm and ups the payload from 1000kg (SR5 4×4 double-cab) to 3000kg. The twin axles at the rear benefit from a new transfer case that can support both 6×4 (centre and rear) and 6×6 drive.

In base 6×6 trim the stretched Toyota HiLux weighs 2610kg and has a claimed Gross Combination Mass of 8100kg.

Bumper to bumper the Hiload is 7536mm long, a massive 2.2m (2211mm) longer than a regular Toyota HiLux.

In the fire and rescue configuration, the Hiload version of the Toyota HiLux is less than 1900mm tall so that it can fit into car parks, and is equipped with a hydraulic power take-off (PTO) from the engine so it can power water pumps for fire fighting.

It is fitted with an Atenta electric vehicle fire suppression system, which supplies an additive that can manage electrical fires more rapidly than water alone.

As well as the fire and rescue configuration, Prospeed designed a number of other uses for the 6×6 Hiload chassis, including industrial and military applications.

In addition to the above applications, a joint development with Dutch engineering firm Tembo can configure the stretched Toyota HiLux with electric propulsion used in the Tembo e-LV mining truck, which is based on the Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series.

In that configuration, the Hiload chassis is equipped with a 28kWh battery providing 60kW (95kW peak) power and 165Nm (250Nm peak) torque in both 6×4 and 6×6 drive.

2023 BMW i5 M60 prototype review: First drive

BMW’s next-generation 5 Series is set to join the brand’s growing EV family with the new BMW i5, coming to an Australian showroom near you in 2024.

It’s i5 then. No, not the Intel Core computer chip, but the hotly anticipated electric-powered version of BMW’s upcoming eighth-generation 5 Series.

We know this because the German carmaker has just officially confirmed the name in a presentation before we head out onto its Miramas test track in southern France to drive the advanced sedan for the very first time.

As the camouflage hints, it is still undergoing development. But the new four-door sedan aims to challenge the Audi A6 E-Tron sedan, Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan and Porsche Taycan with the choice of either a headlining 440kW dual-motor four-wheel drive or milder 250kW single-motor rear-wheel drive drivetrain – the latter claimed to offer a range of up to 582km on the WLTP test cycle, according to BMW’s own figures.

An extended line-up of petrol, diesel and petrol-electric plug-in hybrid 5 Series siblings are also in the pipeline and set for launch in Australia in September, but it is the electric-powered i5 that BMW has chosen to give us for our first drive of its crucial mid-range model.

Known under the internal codename G60, it is BMW’s eighth electric-powered production model, following on from the i3 hatchback, iX3, iX, i4, Chinese market i3 sedan, iX1 and recently unveiled i7. Along with the sedan model driven here, BMW says it is also putting the finishing touches to a Touring version of the latest ‘i’ model, which is planned to head into Australian showrooms in early 2024.

Andreas Holzinger, the lead engineer for the new car, says the main challenge in developing the i5 was providing it with the same broad set of properties as the standard 5 Series. “On the one hand, customers expect dynamics similar to the smaller 3 Series. On the other, they want comfort to rival the larger 7 Series. Our goal was to make them as similar as possible,” he says.

The i5 prototypes we drove were all heavily disguised, so there’s not a great deal we can tell you about the styling until it makes its world debut next month. Unlike the design strategy of many of its key premium brand rivals, however, BMW has traditionally chosen to position its electric models close to their internal combustion engine stablemates in terms of appearance.

The sedan model retains the traditional three-box silhouette sported by all 5 Series models down through the years, with a long bonnet, relatively flat roof line and sloping boot line endowing it with familiar proportions.

Holzinger confirms the new electric model shares its bodywork with the 5 Series – alongside which it will be produced at BMW’s Dingolfing factory in Germany for the Australian market. The bonnet, doors and boot lid are aluminium, with the remainder in steel, he says. Subtle visual differentiation is set to come with the grille, which is described as being unique to the i5. The new electric sedan will also receive its own aerodynamically optimised wheels ranging from 18 to 21 inches in diameter.

Similarly, BMW is holding back on the dimensions. But expect a car that is longer, wider and higher than the outgoing seventh-generation 5 Series. It also rides on a longer wheelbase and adopts wider tracks both front and rear.

With a drag co-efficient of 0.23, the new BMW matches the new eighth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class for aerodynamic efficiency. However, it fails to improve on the 0.22 of the model it replaces, owing in part to a noticeably bolder front end with a higher set bonnet and, with it, a larger frontal area.

A careful look reveals a light ‘shark nose’ effect to the grille, which leans forward slightly between heavily tapered headlamps. There are also flush door handles to smooth airflow along the sides. The underbody also adopts flat paneling from tip to tail as part of the wind-cheating measures.

Much of the interior of the prototype was also covered. But we can reveal the i5 and new 5 Series are set to adopt a dashboard layout similar to the i7 and 7 Series, with a free-standing curved digital panel housing the instruments and infotainment displays, and a thick-rim multi-function steering wheel among the key interface points.

It also receives iDrive 8.5, the latest generation of BMW’s iDrive control and operating system. Based on Linux software code, it supports a new menu layout, including a home screen that’s designed to simplify operation through the use of widgets. It also provides for greater customisation and reconfiguring of various digital functions. There is also the option of linking your smartphone, either via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Further developments include 5G-enabled over-the-air (OTA) functionality for faster software update downloads.

As a world first, the i5 and its 5 Series sibling will also come with a new optional Automated Lane Change function. Part of an updated Highway Assist system, it allows hands-off lane changes triggered by the driver looking into the side mirrors. The Level 2 autonomous system uses a camera within the digital instrument display to continuously monitor the movement of the driver’s eyes. When the adjacent lane is free of traffic and it detects eye movement to either the left- or right-hand exterior mirror, it initiates a lane change in that direction at speeds up to 130km/h.

Unlike the upcoming A6 E-Tron, EQE sedan and Model S, all of which uses a dedicated skateboard-style electric car platform, the i5 is based on a modified version of the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform that underpins other eighth-generation internal combustion engine 5 Series models.

This mirrors the move BMW has also already undertaken with the CLAR-based X3 and iX3, 3 Series and i3 sedan, 4 Series and i4, X5 and iX, and the i7 and 7 Series, giving it valuable economies of scale and production flexibility across a wide range of models.

Among the modifications made to the platform is a new floorpan to house the electric sedan’s battery pack. The 81kWh lithium-ion unit, measuring 108mm in height and consisting of four modules with 72 cells each, operates at 400 volts.

Despite this, there is a traditional transmission tunnel running back through the interior. So while the i5 adopts the same driving position as the 5 Series, it is also compromised in terms of rear seat foot room, which fails to match that of its flat-floored electric-powered rivals.

There is also additional bracing for the suspension towers, as well as a new front sub-frame in a move Holzinger says provides the i5 with a stiffer body structure than the new 5 Series.

“We have achieved levels of rigidity never before seen on the 5 Series. The battery pack and other measures we have added to the i5 help to improve both static and torsional stiffness over the internal combustion engine 5 Series,” he says.

There will be two i5 models from the start of sales later this year. Included are the performance-oriented four-wheel-drive i5 M60 and the less powerful i5 eDrive 40. The former uses two synchronous electric motors, one up front and the other at the rear, for a combined output of 440kW, with the latter receiving a single rear-mounted motor and 250kW.

There are differing driving characters for each. However, it is the i5 M60 that clearly steals the show, with the sort of performance and dynamic qualities to challenge the best of the electric-powered competition.

We drove it on two different handling tracks at BMW’s Miramas test facility – the first a fast and open coarse-chip bitumen course, and the second a smoother and altogether more challenging course with greater elevation and tighter corners. 

The latest M-Performance model is agreeably straightforward from the off, with a stop/start button and a slider-style gear selector close to the driver on the centre console to get you underway.

There are two main powertrain modes: D for Drive and B for Battery. The former favours coasting with little mechanical drag, with the latter providing a relatively high level of energy recuperation and braking effect. Additionally, there are three main driving modes: Personal, Sport and Eco, with an additional Individual mode that allows you to tailor the steering, drivetrain and suspension to your liking.

The delivery under gentle throttle loads is exceptionally smooth and linear. The response is instantaneous, with real urgency from standstill.

The most powerful of the two i5 models gains pace with effortless grace and great flexibility. It is all achieved with outstanding drivetrain refinement and in almost complete silence. There is a synthesised substitute, which aims to mimic the typical induction and exhaust roar of BMW’s internal combustion engine models with a Hans Zimmer-composed soundtrack, but it comes across as being highly contrived. A matter of personal taste, for sure.

It is what happens when you tap on the paddle that resides within the left-hand side spoke of the steering wheel on left-hand drive examples of the new car that really gets your attention. Marked with the word “Boost”, it unleashes the i5 M60’s full 440kW for up to 10 seconds at a time, with a digital countdown appearing in the middle of the instrument panel keeping tabs on just how long it remains on tap.

The result is explosive acceleration and searing speed on a loaded throttle. BMW builds some of the best electric motors in the business. They are engineered to reach 17,000rpm, which is higher than those used by most rivals.

In the new range-topping i5, they make for rampant properties, the sort that takes your breath away the first time you dig deep into its considerable reserves. The initial pick-up is very intense. There are also very muscular qualities to the mid-range, where it gathers speed with great zeal and offers huge overtaking potential.

BMW is yet to provide details to the i5 M60’s official acceleration times and top speed, but expect it to hit 100km/h from standstill in under 4.0sec and reach a limited 225km/h.

Quick, then. But also fun to drive?

The i5 M60 is underpinned by a so-called Adaptive M Suspension Professional package, with steel springs at the front and air springs at the rear, together with BMW’s variable damping control (VDC) and standard 245/40 (front) and 275/35 (rear) tyres on 20-inch wheels. The high-mileage prototype also featured an optional Dynamic Drive system, with electromechanical roll stabilisation.

Interestingly, the air springs are reserved exclusively for the i5 sedan. BMW says they will not appear on the 5 Series sedan.

We’re yet to see a kerb weight figure for the i5 M60, but the handling balance is terrifically neutral in Sport mode and the standard dynamic stability control setting, with strong levels of front-end grip and a low centre of gravity providing it with very agile properties. With the right line, you can confidently carry high speeds into and through open radius corners without any tendency for the front end to push wide. 

Excellent purchase at the rear and superb traction also allow you to deploy the instant power early for romping exits.

The variable-rate steering, well weighted in the best of BMW traditions, delivers a good level of off-centre precision, if not the last word in feedback. Still, with the active rear-steer system helping to rotate the rear, there’s enough communication here to give the i5 M60 engaging dynamic qualities and a secure feel over challenging roads.

Slackening off the dynamic stability control brings distinctly more rear-biased qualities much in the character of BMW’s existing four-wheel-drive xDrive models. You can use this to entertaining effect out of tighter corners, with a surfeit of torque able to overcome the otherwise excellent adhesion for lurid drifts when the road conditions allow.

Two things stand out immediately when you get acquainted and begin to push the i5 M60. Firstly, the outstanding body control. A combination of heavy damping and roll stabilisation provides excellent suppression of pitch and roll. It also sees the new sedan settle quickly over undulations and tricky humps at speed.

The second is the wheel control. There is a firm feel to the ride, but excellent shock absorption means the new BMW rarely needs one compression and rebound stroke when dealing with bumps and potholes. This gives it an impressive level of comfort. There is, however, some lingering tyre roar on coarse road surfaces.

The brake pedal feel is also quite good. There’s not a whole lot of life to the pedal, but a clearly defined bite point allows you to modulate the brakes well.

As convincing as the i5 M60 is, though, it’s the i5 eDrive 40 that is likely to find favour with a greater majority of buyers, and not just because of its lower price. With 250kW, it is less frenetic. There is still plenty of performance and a ‘Boost’ function to allow you to make the most of the instant-on properties of the electric drivetrain when the conditions allow, but it is more restrained in character.

Without a front electric motor, it also steers with added precision and, despite running standard dampers, often rides with greater composure. The rear-wheel-drive layout also provides it with greater efficiency and a greater range.

BMW quotes average energy consumption of between 21.2 and 17.9kWh/100km for the i5 M60, giving it a WLTP range of between 436 and 516km. The i5 eDrive40 betters it, with an average of between 19.7 and 16.0kWh/100km and a range of between 468 and 582km. Charging of the battery can be achieved at 11kW on an AC system, and at up to 200kW on a DC charger.

BMW’s electric models have taken large strides of late. The i5 sedan builds solidly on the foundations laid by other CLAR platform-based models to offer a level of completeness that places it at the sharp end of the electric car ranks.

There are some obvious compromises in it sharing its platform with internal combustion engine 5 Series models, not least in its packaging and overall accommodation. But in terms of performance, dynamics, ride, refinement and overall efficiency, there is a lot to like.

We’ll know a lot more when we get to drive the definitive production version later this year, including Australian pricing, but for now BMW appears to have nailed the electric 5 Series brief with a car that strikes a fine balance in many areas.

Study links new-car smell to higher risk of cancer

A new study from a Chinese university has found ‘new-car smell’ – or rather the chemicals which cause it – could lead to a higher risk of cancer.

It turns out ‘new-car’ smell could be intoxicating beyond the excitement of getting into a brand-new motor vehicle – and explains why the inside of windscreens develop a thin film coating (showing signs of chemical evaporation) as the cabin plastics begin to ‘sweat’.

While there have been several studies over the years warning about the potential dangers of new-car smell, a new report has doubled down on the earlier findings.

China’s Beijing Institute of Technology has found the chemicals which create ‘new-car smell’ could be carcinogenic, which has been supported by science industry experts and previous research into the potentially toxic aromas.

Published online in the scientific journal Science Direct, the latest study was conducted by a team of scientists in China who analysed the levels of chemicals which evaporate at room temperature – known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – in a new car.

The VOCs can be given off by leather, plastic and vinyl materials – as well as adhesives, sealants and glass cleaners – in a car’s interior.

The risk of the chemicals being released can increase as the car interior gets hotter, such as when it has been parked in the sun for an extended period.

Using Chinese safety levels as a baseline, the study found the amount of formaldehyde – a ‘Class 1’ carcinogen often found in pressed-wood building materials – which evaporated had exceeded the suggested limit by almost 35 per cent.

The amount of acetaldehyde – a ‘Class 2’ carcinogen which can damage your DNA and prevent it from being repaired – was also found to be more than 60 times higher than baseline safety levels.

The car – an unnamed medium-sized SUV – was parked outside for 12 days and exposed to a variety of real-world weather conditions, rather than the controlled environment of a science lab. 

While the study did not directly address the health concerns associated with a car’s occupants being exposed to the organic chemicals, the research team said the compounds could continue to evaporate after the 12-day test period – potentially presenting long-term risks.

It’s not the first time new-car smell has been linked to illness – in 2016, Australian CSIRO researchers found high levels of toxic emissions in new cars for at least six months after they left the showroom.

The level of VOCs emitted were also found to be enough to cause drowsiness and lethargy in people who had spent only 10 minutes in a new car, while certain toxins had previously been linked to cancer and foetal abnormalities.

In a review of the latest study on Science Media Centre, Oliver Jones – Professor of Chemistry at RMIT University in Melbourne – said the latest findings backed up previous research into new car smells, though there is no definitive proof the dosage of chemicals which evaporated in the tests will lead to cancer.

“New car smell is not without risks – we know from previous research that for some people it can cause health problems such as dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath,” Mr Jones said. “Healthwise the best new-car smell is probably no smell.”

“Many of these compounds are listed as carcinogenic, but then so are sunlight and alcohol. It is the dose that makes the poison – just because something is present does not automatically mean it’s a problem; it’s about quantity (even water is toxic if you drink enough of it).  

“The current paper is focused on ways to better model how much of the chemicals that cause new car smell might be released over time in a car under different conditions.”

Mr Jones also praised the team of scientists for adopting a new and more accurate research method, which could influence future studies.

“This is a detailed study that seems to have been conducted thoroughly, in a real-world environment rather than a lab,” Mr Jones said.  

“The authors built a predictive model of the release of the chemicals that cause new car smell and then tested the predictions against measured concentrations.

“The fact that higher temperatures increase the rate of off-gassing from materials is not new but what is interesting here is that the authors use the surface temperature of the materials to predict the amount of compound that might be released over time rather than the more commonly used metric of air temperature in the cabin.

“This makes sense when you think about how hot the seats and the steering wheel can get on a hot summer day, especially in places like Australia.  A more accurate model gives us a better idea of the likely levels of potentially harmful chemicals over time and this gives us a better idea of the risks – which can only be a good thing for drivers.”

As previously reported, car-makers are attempting to reduce new car smells due to the fear of occupants being exposed to health risks.

In 2018, Ford filed a patent for an automated new-car smell removal method, which would “bake” the car and release the VOCs to reduce the smells – though it is yet to be implemented by the auto giant.

2024 Tesla Model Y facelift imagined based on Model 3 spy photos

Using the leaked photo of the updated Tesla Model 3 as a guide, this is what a facelift for the Tesla Model Y electric SUV could look like.

As night follows day, a facelift for the 2024 Tesla Model Y electric SUV is expected to arrive closely behind the upcoming update for the Tesla Model 3 sedan.

A leaked image of the facelifted Tesla Model 3 (known internally as the ‘Highland’) appeared online earlier this month – giving a preview of what the updated Tesla Model Y, reportedly codenamed ‘Juniper’, could look like when it arrives next year.

Illustrated by Drive’s Photoshop guru Theottle, the updated Model Y adopts the new front end from the ‘Highland’ Model 3, with slimmer, Roadster sports car-like lights and a simpler front bumper.

Although the Model 3 and Model Y have unique bodywork, many external parts on the Model 3 and Model Y – headlights, tail-lights, mirror caps, door handles and camera modules – are largely shared between the two vehicles.

The design of the current Tesla Model Y’s front bumper is very similar to the Model 3, suggested the facelifted sedan’s new front bumper shape may spread across to its SUV sibling.

News agency Reuters was first to report on plans for the facelifted Model Y, which is due to go into production in October 2024 – about a year after the updated Model 3, due to roll off the Chinese production line from September 2023, according to news agencies Reuters and Bloomberg.

The Reuters report claimed upgrades would “involve the exterior and interior” of the Model Y, but it is unclear how extensive the revisions will be.

Updates to the Model 3 sedan are reportedly slated to include the front-end restyle seen in the leaked photo, plus changes to the rear bumper, door mirrors, and camera modules on the front wheel arches and front bumper.

While the Model 3 facelift is set to gain a restyled body line around the front wheel-arch cameras – which will extend into the front doors for the first time – the Model Y has had this design since it was unveiled in 2019.

Reports also claim Tesla is planning to switch from in-house-designed seats to an external supplier, while the faux woodgrain-look dashboard trim currently paired to black synthetic leather-look seats may be replaced by a fabric finish.

Reuters claims changes may also be planned to the Model 3 and Model Y’s electric motors and battery packs, but specifics are yet to be revealed.
