CarAdvice has partnered with tyre manufacturer Bridgestone to produce a short video to help build awareness for the importance of good quality tyres. Here’s the video we helped them produce. 


You’ve heard it often enough: good-quality tyres matter in protecting you on the road. After all, safety isn’t just a matter of optioning up the latest tech items.

We might go on about Autonomous Emergency Braking and the like, but the value of all collision avoidance tech is dramatically reduced if you’re rolling on cheap rubber.

In 2016, CarAdvice ran a tyre comparison test, which, although focused on performance driving, highlighted the different characteristics of tyres from a number of brands.

Now, here’s the thing: All of the tyres used were high-end rubber from a range of well-known, respected brands. And, performance testing or not, it became clear that not all tyres are born equal. Likewise, different circumstances and intentions will deliver different results from each option.

If you’ve opted instead for a cheaper option, you could be doing yourself a very real, very dangerous disservice. This is one situation where you do indeed get what you pay for.

To highlight the differences, Bridgestone teamed up with CarAdvice for a fun video that focuses on the importance of choosing tyres from a reputable brand.

In the video, comedian (and well-known car enthusiast) Shane Jacobson invites three punters along to test their tyres. The twist: They each also bring along a prized possession to put on the line for this tyre test.

Catch the video above! Ultimately, the takeaway here is that whether you go with Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental or otherwise – quality tyres make a difference.

2016-17 Volvo S90, XC90 recalled for air-conditioning fix

Volvo has issued a recall for its 2016 and 2017 model-year S90 and XC90 model lines over concerns the air-conditioner’s drain hose could leak.

The Swedish manufacturer reports that the drainage hose for the air-conditioning unit, used to transfer condensation water generated by the cooling system out of the vehicle, may not have been properly attached.

As a result, moisture could accumulate in the occupant compartment, which could lead to issues with the air-conditioner’s functionality. If the condition occurs, it could affect other electrical systems, posing a safety hazard to the vehicle’s occupants.

The VIN ranges for the affected model lines are as follows:

S90 – 000001 to 005452
XC90 – 000064 to 129750

Owners of the recalled Volvo models should contact their local dealer to arrange the inspection and repair of their vehicle.

Mazda’s new swan-wing door patent isn’t exactly helping its ‘no new sports car’ claims

A recent patent filed by Mazda has once again sparked rumours of a potential RX-9 rotary sports car – which could, some reports suggest, debut at this year’s Tokyo motor show in October.

The document details a door that opens out and upward, helping occupants to avoid hitting curbs in a low-riding car. While the idea itself isn’t a new concept, Mazda’s filing includes a more simplified mechanism to make closing the door easier.

Many manufacturers, particularly those that produce high-end sports cars such as McLaren, use gas struts to hold a vertically-hinged door open. This is a method labelled by Mazda as “relatively large-scale, heavy and expensive”.

Instead, the company’s design employs a torsion bar to hold the door in place when fully open. Mazda says the “torsional energising force” in the bar will make it easier to close the door.

A similar design is used by British marque Aston Martin, though Mazda’s version creates a 15-degree angle, compared to Aston’s 12.

It’s reported this door opening design will make its production debut on the market version of the 2015 RX-Vision concept (below), said to be the spiritual successor to the iconic RX-7 and the more recent RX-8 coupes.

Power is expected to come from a new SkyACTIV-R turbocharged rotary engine, which was confirmed to be under development when the RX-Vision was revealed at the Tokyo motor show two years ago.

Should an ‘RX-9‘ become a reality, it will reignite the Japanese sports car battle, taking on the upcoming Toyota Supra, the rumoured successor to the Nissan 370Z, along with the rumoured Honda ‘baby NSX’ – which could go by ‘ZSX’ according to European patent documents.

Mini Electric Concept revealed: Cooper EV coming in 2019

The Mini Electric Concept has been unveiled ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month, previewing the all-electric production model due in 2019.

Finished in an eye-catching matte-silver paintwork with contrasting yellow accents – which harks back to the original Mini E of 2008 –  the Mini Electric Concept is still unmistakably recognisable as a Mini, though is distinguished from its more conventionally-powered brethren thanks to its closed grille and full-LED headlight treatments, 19-inch wheels with fiberglass inserts, and the company’s plug-shaped ‘E’ badge throughout the exterior.

The roof starts at the front in matte-white and transitions into high-gloss yellow at the rear, a treatment echoed in the vehicle’s side skirts – which gains transparency over the matte-silver exterior paint as it approaches the rear wheel arch.

Numerous fiberglass structures, including the air deflectors and the simulated air intakes, have been constructed using 3D printing – which the company says illustrate the opportunities offered by 3D printing in terms of producing functional design elements for styling and customisation.

At the rear, the flat tailgate differs from the current production models that incorporate three-dimensional badges and licence plate holders. The rear of the Mini Electric Concept also sees new LED tail-lights that each form half of the UK’s Union Jack as part of their dot matrix.

The rear diffuser is made out of fibreglass too, while the electric drivetrain means there’s no tailpipes – instead replaced by louvred surfaces in the rear bumper simulating air outlets.

Mini is yet to detail the Electric Concept’s powertrain, so it’s unknown what kind of performance and range to expect from the production model. However, the all-electric 2008 Mini E – limited to 500 units – featured a 150kW/220Nm electric motor that could propel the EV from 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds.

The company’s original electric model had a limited top speed of 152km/h to conserve battery life, and was capable of running over 240 kilometres on a single charge.

2018 Bentley Continental GT revealed

The new-generation 2018 Bentley Continental GT has been revealed overnight, bringing a new look, the availability of high-end technology and even more power.

Now in its third generation, the Continental GT is still instantly recognisable as a Bentley thanks to its imposing front grille and four circular headlights, but now has a squarer and more muscular aesthetic compared to its curvaceous predecessor. The design draws much inspiration from the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept that was revealed at the 2015 Geneva motor show.

Headlining upgrades include an all-new body that is 80 kilograms lighter than the outgoing car, an upgraded version of the company’s 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine – now dubbed ‘TSI’ like all turbo petrol models offered by German parent Volkswagen – mated to a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the introduction of a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay.

Bentley’s new infotainment unit sits on a three-sided rotating display, which starts with no screen when the vehicle is off to give the illusion of a seamless dashboard, then when the car turns on the display glides forward and rotates to reveal the touchscreen.

Owners who want a more traditional layout can rotate the display again to show three analogue dials consisting of an outside temperature gauge, a compass and a chronometer.

There’s also a new LED Matrix headlights, an interpretation of the Volkswagen Group’s digital driver’s instruments, and a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

So far, just the W12 TSI engine has been detailed – it’s unknown if and when a turbocharged V8 option will join the range, though the previous model indicates its likely – which now produces 466kW of power and 900Nm of torque. That’s 32kW and 180Nm more than the outgoing W12 Continental GT, and the performance gains are equally as significant.

Bentley claims the new Continental GT will accelerate to 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.7 seconds, or 0.8 seconds quicker than the vehicle it replaces, on its way to a top speed of 333km/h (207mph) – which is 3km/h down on the previous car.

Those performance figures also better the previous-generation Bentley Continental GT Speed, which developed 472kW and 840Nm from its twin-turbo W12, was able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 336km/h.

Adopting the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission helps to shift gears faster, while also improving fuel efficiency. The new Continental GT claims combined fuel use of 12.2L/100km, a significant improvement on the previous model’s 14.2L/100km.

Drivers can manipulate the shift times through the Continental’s selectable driving modes. In ‘Sport’, Bentley says shifts are “seemingly instantaneous” to deliver maximum acceleration, while in ‘Comfort’ the gear changes are more relaxed to allow for a more seamless and imperceptible shifts.

Despite having 21-inch wheels as standard and 22-inch rims as an option, the Continental is still claimed to be as comfortable and liveable as ever thanks to its Bentley Dynamic Ride system. A 48-volt roll control system controls and adjusts the electronic actuators on the anti-roll bar of each axle to improve handling and ride comfort.

Like the transmission, the Dynamic Ride system can be adjusted through the Continental’s different driving modes.

A revised air suspension set-up compliments the 48-volt ride system, which now features three-chamber air springs with 60 per cent more air volume in the softest setting compared to the previous car.

There’s also upgraded brakes, with the front discs increasing 15mm in diameter to 420mm in this latest generation, along with a revised exhaust system with an adaptive valve.

Like all Bentley models, the new Continental GT is available with a range of exterior and interior options so customer can specify to their heart’s contempt.

Some 17 standard paint options are available, with up to 70 exterior hues on offer as part of the extended range. There’s also 15 carpet options, right different handcrafted veneers – including a further four dual-veneer options – and 15 interior hide choices.

For those who want more from their Continental GT, there’s also two technology option packs available from launch.

The City Specification package is targeted at those who complete more urban journeys, adding a hands-free boot opening, pedestrian warning, traffic sign recognition, city-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and a 360-degree camera system.

Meanwhile, the Touring Specification aids long-distance journeys, bringing adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, active lane assist, a head-up display (HUD), night vision with an infrared camera, and pre-sense braking.

Additionally, the Mulliner Driving Specification is more cosmetic option, adding 22-inch lightweight forged alloys, unique ‘diamond in diamond’ leather quilting, embroidered Bentley emblems, additional veneer options, a jewelled-finish fuel filler cap, sports pedals, and an indented leather headliner. Buyers can also opt for personalised stitching in the front and rear of the car, along with personalised treadplates.

The 2018 Bentley Continental GT will make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month.

2018 Porsche Cayenne revealed, Australian debut due mid-year

The new third-generation 2018 Porsche Cayenne has been given an official unveiling today, after it surfaced online earlier in the week.

The new SUV arrives seven years after its predecessor debuted at the 2010 Geneva motor show, and 15 years since Porsche first turned the concept of a sports-car brand upside down with the first Cayenne.

FLASHBACK: “ATLANTA, March 5, 2002 — Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) today revealed the first glimpse of its luxury sport utility vehicle, the Porsche Cayenne. Taking the Porsche experience to a new level, the Cayenne will create the perfect balance of performance and power, delivering outstanding on-pavement performance and very good off-pavement characteristics. The vehicle’s debut is slated for the last half of 2002. “

The look of the Cayenne has stuck to a clear theme since it first appeared, and while that first model threw the automotive world into a storm of polarised passion and fury, the big SUV has gone on to become an accepted member – for the most part – of the Porsche family.

The sleeker second generation helped the badge move beyond its ‘face only a mother could love’ image, and Porsche has wisely stuck with the ‘if it ain’t broke’ philosophy for this new third-gen model.

Identifying changes to the Cayenne’s design through the front and profile view is a job for trainspotters, but the rear is clear in its new-gen Panamera inspiration.

The cabin continues that trend of familiarity, with the dash and console design inspired both by the previous Cayenne, and the newer Macan and Panamera models.

A large new 12.3-inch display dominates the dash, which also boasts a more elegant and luxury-focused look than the previous model.

The centre console still features large grab bars, but the thick-bezelled vertical vents of the outgoing generation’s dash have been replaced with subtle black-framed horizontal units.

Moving to the bones of the car, Porsche says its new Cayenne is the most dynamic yet, although we’d expect a brand to promise no less of its latest model.

The new Cayenne is built on the MLBevo platform that underpins Audi’s new Q7 and Bentley’s big Bentayga. The architecture features a liberal use of aluminium, cutting dry weight down to 1985kg in its standard form – compared to 2040kg for the outgoing model.

The new model measures in at 4918mm long and 1983mm wide, riding on a 2895mm wheelbase. These numbers mean the third-gen Cayenne is 63mm longer overall than its predecessor and 45mm wider, without any change to the wheelbase.

Space in the luggage compartment is listed at 770 litres with the rear seats up, marking a 100-litre increase in capacity. Seats-down figures have not been released, although the outgoing model claims 1780 litres.

Two engines will be offered at launch, both petrol.

At the entry end, there’s a 3.0-litre turbo V6 offering 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque. That mill claims promises to hurl the base Cayenne to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds, or 5.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package added.

Stepping up to the Cayenne S switches you to a newly-developed 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, producing 324kW and 550Nm for a 0-100km/h claim of 5.2 seconds. Upgrade to Sport Chrono and you’ll slip below the five-second barrier with a 4.9-second claim.

In both models, Porsche’s new eight-speed Tiptronic S auto gearbox is featured, matched to all-wheel drive and the Porsche Traction Management system.

Maximum speeds are listed at 245km/h and 265km/h respectively, and fuel figures – on the NEDC cycle for Europe – are listed at 9.2 and 9.4L/100km respectively.

No surprise, Porsche says it took its cues from the 911 in developing the new Cayenne to ensure a sporting drive. To that end, electric rear-axle steering features for the first time, following in the footsteps of the 911 and Panamera.

Suspension up front is through a separated link design, and the rear gets a multi-link design. Porsche’s new three-chamber air suspension unit moves over from the Panamera to the Cayenne’s option list, too.

Porsche 4D Chassis Control is featured for real-time optimisation of handling characteristics, along with the active PASM damper system.

Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control roll stabilisation is available as an option on the base and standard on the S, switching from hydraulic to electric with a 48V system borrowed from the Q7 and Bentayga.

There’s also mixed tyre sizes, and 19 inches is as small as the wheels get, with 21-inch the biggest (without stopping in at Bob Jane on the way home from the dealer).

Behind those hoops, the new Porsche Surface Coated Brake option adds a tungsten-carbide layer on traditional steel discs, improving heat soak without the cost of carbon-ceramic discs. That said, Porsche hasn’t revealed what you’ll pay.

Australia

The new Cayenne will touch down in Australia from the middle of 2018, with pricing and local specs to be confirmed earlier in the year.

2017 Tesla Model X 75D review


We are big fans of the Tesla Model S – it mixes style with performance and technology to bring a luxury electric car with few compromises. So surely a bigger version of the Model S, catered to families would be a no brainer?

To make sure, we put the electric Tesla Model X 75D through a week-long test covering a stack of everyday family tasks expected of an SUV.

For those of you who don’t have your finger on the automotive pulse – Tesla is a company that burst on to the scene seemingly from nowhere, and in only a handful of years has managed to release a sports car, a luxury sedan, a luxury SUV and an entry-level affordable sedan for the masses.

The proposition and pitch is that any Tesla is an electric vehicle that doesn’t fill you with range anxiety on every drive and isn’t compromised in terms of features and technology.

I’ll be the first to admit, the Model X isn’t the prettiest SUV on the market. While it looks okay from front on, the rear view is a little, well, ghastly. Actually, a lot ghastly. I’m not the last word on style, but I’m yet to come across anybody (that doesn’t own one, or work for the company) who thinks it looks good. It’s certainly unapologetically different from the rest of the SUV market.

In terms of where the Model X 75D sits in the range, it’s right at the very bottom. Pricing kicks off from $138,100 (plus luxury car tax and on-road costs) and that gets you the Model X 75D in five-seat form mated to an all-wheel drive drivetrain that uses two electric motors and a 75kWh battery pack, along with height-adjustable air suspension.

That purchase price also gets you 400kWh of free annual Tesla supercharger credit. In real terms, that’s around 2200km of free driving each year. If you elect to pair your home power to solar, that power comes free, or there are some energy plans on the market that cost $1 per day for unlimited electric vehicle charging.

If there’s one thing that makes the Model X stand out, it’s the ‘Falcon Wing’ doors, which use an array of sensors to vary their opening aperture. They can open in tight spaces (they only need 30cm width between the door and the car) and fully open in larger spaces, plus they look ridiculously cool when your second row passengers make a rockstar exist on the high street.

While the starting price may seem reasonable, it doesn’t take long to get carried away with options. There are only a few to choose from thankfully and they’re not overly expensive in isolation.

  • $8300: Six seat interior
  • $8300: Six seat interior with centre console
  • $4100: Seven seat interior
  • $8300: Premium upgrades package. Includes: HEPA air filtration system, self-presenting front doors, custom audio system, heated seats for each passenger, heated steering wheel and heated wiper blades and nozzles
  • $6900: Enhanced AutoPilot. Includes: An increase in the number of cameras, plus extra computing power and additional sensors, plus 360-degree camera (more on this later)
  • $4100: Full self driving capability (Enhanced AutoPilot option also required). Includes: All features of Enhanced AutoPilot, plus an additional four cameras and the future ability for full self driving functionality (also more on this later)
  • $1100: Tow package

Our test car had the seven seat interior, tow package, premium upgrades package, enhanced AutoPilot, black leather interior and pearl white paint, totalling $26,000, with an on-road price in Victoria of $188,212.

Before we get into how the Model X drives, it’s worth briefly noting how significant the enhanced AutoPilot features are.

These options will give the driver an ability – in the future – for the vehicle to completely drive itself. The hardware here is activated but will need a software update over the air at some point in the future when legislation allows the vehicle to drive on its own.

This hardware makes it physically possible for the car to do this, which means that even if the car is 10 years old when Australia joins the 21st century, it’ll still function as a fully autonomous vehicle. That’s exciting stuff and nobody else can boast that at the moment.

Step inside the cabin (the doors self present if you’ve ticked the option box) and it’s a simple and clean affair. The leather-clad dashboard sweeps over to a huge 17-inch colour touchscreen that is arguably the centrepiece of this interior.

The infotainment screen manages everything from satellite navigation through to music streaming and climate controls. It’s a very functional screen that doesn’t take long to get used to, but it can be a bit tricky to use on the move, requiring quite precise button presses.

It’s backed by a decent voice recognition system that requires a single press to input a range of audio comments; from calling contacts to entering satellite navigation addresses.

Anybody who listens to the CarAdvice radio show each Monday night will be horrified to hear that Tesla has removed the AM band from the infotainment system.

Thankfully, you’ll still be able to listen to the show by using one of the built-in music streaming services. Spotify and TuneIn Radio both allow streaming of audio over GSM. The quality of this streaming has improved immensely over previous versions of Tesla’s firmware.

In addition to streaming over the internet, users can also stream music over Bluetooth or USB. Two USB ports for the first row are backed by an additional two USB ports in the second row with all four functioning as USB device chargers.

One of the best things about the in-built Google Maps is the currency of data. Because streets and street data are updated all the time by Google, there’s never a need to upgrade map data. It’s also extremely accurate when it comes to traffic delays and arrival timing.

The screen in front of the driver that displays the speedometer and ‘tachometer’ can be modified to present a range of information, but the key functions relate to AutoPilot, which is activated using the cruise control stalk.

But here is the problem. While we had the car on loan, all the data collected by ‘Hardware 1’ Tesla vehicles is obsolete. Hardware 1 was Tesla’s first iteration of cameras and sensors used for AutoPilot, autonomous emergency braking and radar cruise control.

Now that the camera and sensor count has increased, all of that ‘self learning’ data is wiped and new data needs to be collected. With other car brands, they test this technology first, implement their learnings and release the vehicle to market. Tesla, instead, uses its customers effectively as test pilots until it has enough data to enable those features.

That means our test car didn’t have features like autonomous emergency braking, automatic high beam lights, automatic windscreen wipers, side collision warning, lane departure warning, high-speed automatic steering, automatic lane change, semi-autonomous parking and Tesla’s Summon self-parking feature.

You read that right – this car, with an on-road price tag of over $180,000 doesn’t have automatic windscreen wipers. That’s technology standard on a $20,000 Mazda 2 – even the entry-level $14,990 Mazda 2 has autonomous emergency braking as standard.

We don’t really care what excuses Tesla has for this technology being non-existent at the moment, it’s not good enough. It’s not good enough for a $50,000 car, let alone one worth almost $200,000. Even the top-specification Model X P100D worth over $300,000 doesn’t have this technology. You’re kidding, right?

That lack of technology was teamed with a Model X software revision in July to fix a ‘minor’ issue from a third party provider that prevented the passenger airbag from deploying.

Yes, Tesla is a company that has made huge advancements in recent years and is arguably the leader in automotive technology, but it’s things like this that simply wouldn’t get by at Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, not by a long shot.

While we’re on the topic of things Tesla needs to do better, let’s look at the build quality. The panel gaps on our test car were astonishing. One of them was big enough for my pinkie finger, while another wouldn’t be acceptable on a five-year old city car, let alone a $180,000 plus luxury SUV.

It’s certainly a thing Tesla is working on and we witnessed this when we drove the Model 3 in California recently, but it’s certainly not good enough at the moment.

Negatives aside, the interior is a really great place to be. There’s plenty of leg- and headroom in the first row, which is helped by the awesome windscreen that sweeps all the way over the first row passenger’s heads, leaving this open and airy feeling.

Second row passengers will love how easy it is to climb in and out of the car. Even with the doors in their narrowest setting, it’s easy to climb in and out of the second row. If there’s enough room for the doors to fully open, you can easily stand in the second row to climb in and out, something you can’t do in any other SUV.

The second row of seats slides electrically on a single pillar that’s surrounded by carpet. It’s quite cool to look at and is totally different to any other car in this segment.

To test out the Model X’s load carrying ability we put it through a number of tests. First up was loading the car with seven adults, two in the first row, three in the second and two in the third.

Getting in and out of the third row is super easy. One touch of the seat back pushes the second row forward and tilts the seat back to make entry easy. Again, you could easily stand in the second row to climb in and out, making entry and egress easy, even for taller adults.

Once nestled in the third row, it was slightly cramped but there was enough room to sit comfortably with enough air flow to keep third row passengers cool.

The standard air suspension made the ride comfortable enough for all three rows, even with a few speed humps thrown into the mix. The intelligent suspension varies its height depending on the passenger load to cater for comfort.

When you’re not carrying passengers in the third row, a single press of the seat back drops the third row into the floor creating a flat boot cavity that stores 2495 litres.

There’s also a storage area at the front that Tesla refers to as the ‘frunk’. Tesla only offered the total capacity of the cargo area in five-seat configuration.

Shortly after our loan, Tesla increased the Model X 75D’s performance capacity with an over-the-air update. It’ll now move from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, making it a pretty quick machine.

Like all electric vehicles, torque is delivered instantly with a stab of the throttle. From a standing start it propels with a great deal of pace and while it tapers off as it reaches legal road speeds, it’s still quite an intoxicating experience.

The second test we put the car through was a towing test. Our car was optioned with the $1100 towing package, allowing it to tow up to 2250kg with a braked trailer.

We stuck Mandy Turner’s custom-built trailer on the back, which weighs in at around 600kg. A towing mode on the infotainment screen is selected to adjust the air suspension to cater for the extra load out back.

We were surprised with how effortlessly the Model X towed with a load. Granted Mandy’s trailer is a lightweight in comparison to the Model X’s towing capacity, but it was so effortless, it felt like there wasn’t actually a trailer on the back.

The only thing we did notice was the amount of chatter through the tow hook. It must be connected to the body through a rigid link without insulation. Every time the trailer hit a bump and the tow ball moved around the coupling, it could be heard through the cabin.

After dropping the trailer off, we set the navigation for some country and gravel roads to see how it would cope with the type of driving some Aussie families still do.

The air suspension coped well with the rutted country roads we threw at it. It soaked up bumps nicely and erred on the side of sporty as opposed to comfort when the bumps became undulations.

Its suspension system needs to cope with a number of factors – the most obvious being the weight. Weighing in at just under 2500kg, there’s a lot going on beneath the skin to cater for a smooth ride, but it does well over a variety of road conditions.

The gravel road we chose to test its higher speed ride was rutted and poor quality, which we were certain would upset the car. The ride was excellent and while we had a few thuds through the cabin, it wasn’t dissimilar to the ride we experienced in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain, which we drove across the same roads only a week earlier.

Despite loose gravel underfoot, sudden throttle inputs were dispatched without a fuss. The traction control does a great job of dealing with sudden torque demands, even on sketchy surfaces.

In and around the city, the Model X’s light steering makes it easy to park and manoeuvre, while the rear-view camera provides clarity to spot vehicles and pedestrians around the car. Front and rear parking sensors also offer centimetre accuracy for close-contact parking.

Tesla claims an NEDC range of 417km for the Model X, which covers a variety of highway and city driving conditions. While we found the range accurate around the city, throw in some highway and country driving and that number disappears fairly quickly.

We travelled around 300km in a day during testing when leaving with full charge only to find that range well under 100km when we finished our trip. Granted, that included a lot of highway driving, but I’m certain we wouldn’t have been able to travel 417km with a single charge.

So after spending a week with the Tesla Model X 75D, it does a huge amount well, but its positives are outweighed by a long list of negatives.

We are absolutely 100 per cent clear on why the car is missing most of the technology it is, but that doesn’t excuse it. The same goes for build quality – Tesla isn’t a company mature enough at this stage to have the expertise to mass manufacture cars to the same quality levels as some German manufacturers.

That type of thing is absolutely not good enough when spending this type of coin. It’s not chump change and buyers should expect more from the company.

I also need to be clear on the fact that I’m not a Tesla hater. I personally love what the company is doing, but it’s misses on detail items like these that will see it being overtaken by mainstream automotive brands.

Lift your game, Tesla. You’re better than this.
