2018 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 spied with new face

The next-generation Mercedes-AMG GLE63 has been spied this week, during performance testing at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

For the first time, we can see the company’s new ‘Panamericana’ front grille – which will soon become a commonplace across the entire AMG range – along with a beefier front bumper treatment, and different tailpipes.

The swirly black-and-white camouflage remains, as do the massive black-painted alloy wheels. We can’t really see the tail-lights under the disguise, but the overall shape of the rear lighting, along with the tailgate itself, look to be pretty similar to the smaller GLC.

While unconfirmed at this stage, the new GLE63 will most likely use the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 as numerous members of the current AMG range. Expect the GLE to use the E63’s 420kW and 450kW tunes for the ‘standard’ and ‘S’ variants.

In terms of timing, we’re expecting the new GLE to be revealed sometime next year, with a market launch due either late-2018 or early-2019.

2018 BMW M5 review

Sometimes, but not often, a car comes along that blows your expectations into another orbit entirely. Like, all the way to Mars. That would be the 2018 BMW M5.

It could easily have been just another high-powered, four-door M-car with the same understated Q-car looks, a bit more grunt, and all the latest gadgetry and safety tech you’d expect of a new-generation model. And frankly, that’s what we half-expected of this sixth-generation M5.

Don’t get me wrong, the BMW M5 has been a celebrated icon for decades, ever since the company came up with the simple but nonetheless effective idea of transforming its standard mid-size luxury sedan into a high-powered giant killer.

The first car to get the M-treatment was the M535i based on the E12-series car and the precursor to the original and full-house M5. It was based on the E28 series and hand-built off the 535i chassis, but added a modified version of the BMW M1 engine to become the fastest production sedan in the world at the time.

Its bloodline now stretches across six generations with the arrival of this latest F90 iteration. But frankly, the outgoing E60 iteration has been a bit of a disappointment – let down by a chassis that didn’t really measure up to what was expected of a new-gen M5.

So, understandably, knowing a new model was just around the corner, it wasn’t really having the effect on me it might have otherwise had. But that’s before I got chatting with a BMW insider, and self-confessed M-obsessive, at an industry event we held earlier this year. He quietly made mention of the fact the new M5 was going to be, well, “the mother of all M5s”.

What he meant to say was the new M5 is lighter, faster and can go from 0–100km/h in a supercar-rivalling 3.4 seconds, completely obliterating the previous car’s best efforts by a full second. That’s actually a big number in the world of production car sprints, and only possible thanks to the added traction from its newfound all-wheel-drive system.

And if optioned with the M Driver’s Package, the electronic speed-limiting shackles come off for a claimed top speed of 305km/h. These are serious numbers for a mid-size sedan with room for five adults and some luggage.

You’ve got to understand this fellow. By his very nature a conservative chap, who generally doesn’t show a lot of emotion. But this time he couldn’t quite cloak his enthusiasm, instead grinning from ear-to-ear like a kid on Christmas morning with a new toy at hand. And this before he’d even seen the car, let alone driven it.

He also strongly suggested I might want to save a certain date for the international launch, which he indicated would include both road and track components. The latter at the famed Estoril race circuit in Portugal. That being the case, I was of course reluctant to share this newfound intel with any of my CarAdvice colleagues – an action that goes totally against company protocol, you understand.

Naturally, I was all-in for this event, even before he went on to mention it would also be the first ever four-wheel-drive M5, having decided to ditch the DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) of its predecessor in favour of a traditional auto with torque converter. In this case, an eight-speed ZF box with a few tricks up its sleeve.

But that’s also the moment when the panic started to set in. After all, the fastest-shifting gearboxes are still DCTs, so why would BMW want to dumb it down? Moreover, the M5 has always been a rear-wheel drive with a hugely powerful petrol engine under the bonnet – because that’s what buyers want, don’t they?

Well, yes and no, according to the head honchos at M-division charged with turning out the new game-changing M5. Because you can still have all that, and more. You see, the new M xDrive is a switchable all-wheel-drive system, which can (if you’re game enough or good enough) completely decouple the front axle, sending all 750 Newton-metres to the rear wheels and making power-oversteer slides a given.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much more to the new M5 that despite its still rather understated looks, this is a car that borders on revolutionary rather than just an evolution of a previous model. It’s underpinned by a truly exceptional chassis from the current G30 5 Series – stiff enough, light enough and beautifully balanced, and a perfect platform for the M-lads to go to work on. And work on, they surely did.

Even after adding the sophisticated four-wheel-drive system, heavier auto transmission and beefed-up suspension, bracing and brakes, the new M5 is still 15kg lighter than the outgoing model. There’s also a bucket-load more kit on board too, as well as every conceivable active safety system available today.

But first, the engine.

It’s a reworked version of the previous 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 powerhouse, only with bigger turbines, more boost and a 10.0:1 compression ratio that all-up makes 441kW from 5600–6700rpm – up from the 423kW of the previous M5 fitted with the Competition Package. Better still, torque is also up by 50Nm, topping out at 750Nm from just 1800rpm and all the way to 5600rpm.

Thankfully, we kicked off our first behind-the-wheel experience in the latest M5 with a 120km road loop that included a well-thought-out mix of beautifully smooth motorways and challenging Portuguese B-roads – some a lot tighter than we might have expected given the car has grown in every dimension.

There’s a multitude of different modes (too many, we’d suggest) accessible via the latest iDrive system’s rotary controller or touchscreen. But all that can effectively be simplified by using the two red buttons on either side of the steering wheel labelled M1 and M2. Both can be individually customised and called up at the touch of each button. Once to call it up, and twice to confirm. The starter button is red, too, but you’ll find that to the right and partially hidden by the wheel itself.

Everything can be adjusted, from suspension settings to shift speed and everything in between, but we kicked off in the default 4WD, which offers a fixed rear bias and smooth shifts. I mean, really smooth shifts.

In this auto-shifting mode, the M5 simply wafts along the motorway like a genuine luxury limo, absorbing the multiple heavy-duty steel expansion joints in these parts as if they weren’t there in the first place. Never before can I recall an M5 that rode so comfortably. We know that because we also got to drive every model that came before it. That’s the M 535i E12, M5 E28, M5 E34, M5 E39 (our fav) and M5 E60.

Of course, it wasn’t long before we ramped things up with stints in Sport and Sport Plus, as well as periodic bursts using the paddleshifters, even on the motorway. One thing is for certain, this is a seriously fast car, perhaps even more so than the numbers suggest.

And it’s quick from the very instant you’re on the throttle. There’s no lag, or if there is, it’s not something you’re ever conscious of, not even on-track. And believe me, Estoril has a few very tight corners that truly test a car’s accelerative potency, and the M5 nailed it.

Power comes on super smooth and linear, while torque is relentless, even when you’re punching it from 200km/h in sixth. And those shifts are much faster, but still with a level of refinement you simply can’t get with a DCT.

This, folks, is as good as it gets when it comes to an automatic transmission offering such duality in performance and refinement in one collective unit. In Sport Plus, though, with the right pedal mashed against the firewall there’s a decided nudge with each upshift – saving this setting for the track would be our recommendation.

There’s no great shift in ride comfort, though, regardless of which suspension setting you choose. Even in the hardcore mode, the M5’s adaptive damping is astonishingly adept at maintaining bump compliance and chassis balance while tackling the worst of the B-road sections.

For a car that tips the scales at a still hefty 1885kg, the M5 feels remarkably light on its feet, even on the tight twisty sections around Sintra of WRC (World Rally Championship) fame. But frankly, there’s no better place to properly prove that than a fast-flowing circuit like Estoril, with its mix of high-speed straightaways and super-technical turns.

You seem to sit lower in this M5 than in previous iterations, and the seats, which are an entirely new design, look more substantial and feel more comfortable than ever before. Good thing there’s plenty of bolster, too, because the speedo is showing 240km/h down the main straight before hitting the anchors at the 150-metre braking marker for turn one.

The odd thing is, the twin-turbo V8 almost feels lazy yet the mid-range pace is ballistic. It’s the same story with the handling. Somehow, the front end feels light and catlike in its ability and willingness to change direction – and it goes exactly where you point it. It’s astonishing, really, considering its weight.

With only a few sighting laps and even fewer solo laps under my belt, I was still more than happy to dial up the 4WD Sport setting via the M Dynamic mode switch, which not only reduces drive to the front wheels, but also allows for a decent degree of rear-axle slip.

Never before have I had so much fun in an M5, and it’s not like it demanded more of the driver either. I’d like to think my skill level is on the rise and my fear of high-speed drifting diminishing with each lap, but the truth is it’s all down to a superbly engineered car in perfect harmony with its myriad on-board technology.

That said, you’d need to be braver than I to turn off the DSC completely, though a few more laps and I reckon I would have had a crack with the 2WD mode. That’s the sort of car this is. It’s hugely inspiring and nothing like its predecessor in that regard. So much so that you tend to start inducing power oversteer at any given opportunity, and controlling the slide is a piece of cake.

By now I had everything ramped up to Sport Plus, except the steering, which I left in Sport – sensing this to be the perfect balance between weight and speed for this kind of track. The other felt slightly too manic for my liking, but that’s the beauty of this system – you can customise all this stuff depending on the conditions at the time, or indeed your skill behind the wheel.

Despite the oversteer antics, there’s still a ton of mechanical grip on offer despite dropping tyre widths by 10mm from 295/35 to 285/35 down back and 285/35 to 275/35 up front. That said, we’d love to see some seriously fat tyres on the rear for the visual appeal alone.

Stopping power on all the M5s we drove (road and track) was courtesy of a set of massive M Carbon Ceramic Brakes (a $16,500 option), and as expected they worked brilliantly, even after scores of laps and repeated abuse by a wide variety of driving styles. The laps continued non-stop for hours on end, but unlike other carbon we’ve tried, these also had great pedal feel, much like you get from a good set of steel rotors.

But for all its supercar-slaying ability, the latest M5 is perhaps the most legitimate marriage between ballistic performance and everyday useability and comfort ever devised – and we mean that. BMW’s M Division has created a genuine tour de force in what is a highly competitive automotive world with billion-dollar brands continually chasing bragging rights by building cars with ever more power, kit and technology.

Its arch rival is the Mercedes-Benz E63, a similarly powered 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 juggernaut with 420kW and 750Nm of torque that claims a 3.5-second sprint time and priced from $209,611.

The new M5 will hit local showrooms from Q2 2018, and be offered in two special launch variants: the First Edition and the Launch Edition. The Launch Edition actually represents the first allocation of just 50 units for Australia priced from $199,900 plus on-roads, whereas for those looking to make more of a statement with their new M5, there is the First Edition limited to just five only and priced from $229,900.

2018 Range Rover PHEV review

Initially, the thought of a full-size Range Rover plug-in hybrid (PHEV) – with a four-cylinder petrol engine – didn’t make any sense at all. I just couldn’t get my head around it. Then, something strange happened. I was creeping through heinous LA traffic in silence behind the wheel of the 2018 Range Rover PHEV (albeit in pre-production prototype form), and the serenity of the cabin started to make me think there might not actually be anything that is more ‘Range Rover’ than the silence afforded by a PHEV powertrain.

What exactly does pre-production prototype mean in terms of the driving experience? According to Land Rover, these vehicles are 95 per cent of what the final production car will be, but that five per cent that needs to be finished off, will make a real difference.

For example, everything works, including the satellite navigation and electronics, but aspects like the suspension tune, throttle calibration, and transition from electric to petrol propulsion haven’t yet been fully dialled in. A feeling of effortlessness, especially in the transition between the two drive modes is non-negotiable according to Land Rover engineers. A Range Rover is, after all, the pinnacle of luxury within the group.

For example, the hybrid system obviously adds a fair wedge of extra weight to the Range Rover, and the suspension system has needed to be re-engineered to compensate for that.

We drove both Range Rover and Range Rover Sport variants of the PHEV after the Los Angeles motor show, and as you’d expect, the driving experience is effectively identical, with only the Sport’s ride firmer than that of the Range Rover to really separate the two. There will be some calibration differences when you flick the Sport into ‘Dynamic’ mode too. Here, we’ll concentrate on the Range Rover specifically.

The PHEV models will go on sale in Australia in March 2018. As a guide, the Range Rover PHEV will start from around $190,000 placing it just above the entry level diesel in the range. Read our pricing breakdown for more details.

Don’t make the mistake of looking at the photos and thinking the changes for 2018 are a few styling tweaks. We know, having driven the PHEV extensively both on and off-road, that there is something a lot more wide-ranging that’s taken place beneath the skin.

The Range Rover’s cabin has been updated, where the most significant changes outside the hybrid drivetrain have taken place. As always, the focus is on comfort and luxury. The flagship model now gets dual-screen infotainment like that of the Velar, which is feature packed and high quality but can take some time to master.

Second-row passengers get new seats with more adjustability, although super luxurious leg room would dictate that you buy a long wheelbase Range Rover. There is more than enough legroom for adults though across all three positions. There’s more storage than before too, but the pervading sense of quality is the main feature and remains the reason most buyers opt for the Range Rover badge.

The Range Rover is powered by a 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine, which produces 221kW and 400Nm, and an electric motor, which generates 85kW. Land Rover quotes the combined outputs as 297kW and 640Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, developed in conjunction with gearbox manufacturer, ZF.

Claimed fuel use is 2.8L/100km, but as always, that includes the first 50km or so on electric power alone. Once you deplete the battery reserves, you’ll see the fuel use rise to what you’d expect from a conventional petrol engine.

According to Land Rover, the PHEV can run on electric power alone for up to 51km and, with a fast charger, you’ll be able to recharge the 13.1kWh lithium-ion battery back to full capacity in 2 hours 45 minutes. A standard plug at home will take seven and a half hours.

Something interesting happened with the system too when we got to the off-road course. Following a lengthy slog out of Los Angeles to get out to the off-road ranch, the battery had dropped down to two per cent. The course was split into two parts and with low-range selected and hill-descent control activated for the first half, the battery had regenerated back up to 12 per cent by the halfway mark, allowing me to tackle the second part of the off-road course in pure EV – and therefore silence. More on that in a minute.

The hybrid system has a couple of clever modes you can use to manipulate what it does with battery power and when. One is the ‘Save’ function, where you can prevent the battery charge dropping below a certain point to save it for later, and ‘Predictive Energy Optimisation’ allows you to put a destination into the satellite navigation and the vehicle will get there in the most economical fashion it can.

Around town, in EV mode, the Range Rover is beautifully quiet as you’d expect. And that silence actually enhances the feeling of luxury – something so important to this high-end SUV segment. In fact, the PHEV immediately makes more sense than you’d ever have thought from the outset. When the petrol engine powers up, there’s the slightest shudder, something we’re told should be sorted by the time production variants arrive.

The other pre-production issue we noticed was some some shunting though the driveline – at a variety of speeds – either on the run or when the petrol engine took over from the electric motor. It was also a factor when the Range Rover was crawling along in traffic. Again, engineers told us that this will be gone by the time the PHEV arrives in showrooms. It’s hard not to take them at their word either, given quiet luxury is a specific part of the Range Rover design brief.

On the highway, and in fact anytime when the four-cylinder engine takes over, it has enough power to get the job done, but obviously isn’t striking any hammer blows like a turbo-diesel or supercharged petrol V8. To be fair though, savage power delivery and a head thumping slab of torque isn’t what this Range Rover is about. With a look to the future, and the ability to access short commutes without using any fuel at all, it’s all about smart technology not outright power.

The four-cylinder engine therefore, tools along nicely, only feels like it has to work if you really stand on the throttle pedal, and aside from the occasional driveline issue seemed to be teamed beautifully to the eight-speed gearbox. I still prefer my full-size (and heavy) SUVs with a meatier engine, but that’s beside the point. This petrol-electric combination will make a lot of sense for any Range Rover buyer who spends most of their time crawling around town.

It was when we headed up into the hills and into the dusty stuff, that things got even more interesting. No matter how often I do it, I’ll never tire of the unique way in which a Range Rover (or Sport for that matter) can transition from the lap of luxury on-road, to the gnarliest off-road trails without batting an eyelid. Wheel articulation, ground clearance, poise, grip and forward progress are all as good as it gets from a standard four-wheel drive regardless of manufacturer. Range Rover owners are hardly going to put a beat down on their $200k SUV, but that doesn’t deter from the reality that they can if they want to.

The PHEV is the first 4×4 that works in low range with electric drive too. You can use any of the drive modes – grass/gravel/snow/mud and ruts and it’s pretty impressive that you can access the Range Rover’s off-road potential in full electric mode. Both Range Rover and Sport have the same working water fording ratings as the ‘normal’ variants too, however, Land Rover doesn’t advise deep water fording in pure EV mode. The engineers found that with the engine off, a deeper water fording will floor the exhaust system if the petrol engine isn’t running. If you raise the suspension to its highest setting though, which you’d do for a water crossing, the petrol engine comes to life automatically.

Hill-descent control works beautifully, aided by the smooth way in which the electric motor delivers its drive, and there’s something very strange about rock crawling and picking your way around a challenging off-road course in silence. Suddenly you can hear every scrabble, every rock that is flicked up by a tyre, every time a part of the undercarriage touches down. It’s an entirely new experience for anyone who does any off-road driving.

And, like it did around town, the Range Rover PHEV made plenty of sense off-road too. There’s potential for the electric drive system to make off-road progress even easier and smoother given the limitless way engineers can manage the power delivery and the smoothness of the way drive is applied. Think about the times a sharp throttle pedal has been a massive pain in the arse off-road. Engineers can tune that out of a vehicle powered by an electric motor.

Range Rover might have been later to the PHEV party than other manufacturers but there’s something deliberate about the way in which it has finally entered the segment. The Range Rover makes much more sense as a PHEV than I ever thought it would, and I look forward to testing the full production model with everything dialled in as we expect it to be. What Land Rover has done, is offer up yet another variant to capture the attention of the luxury SUV buyer, and given it will be one of the more affordable in the range, that’s sure to be a broad group.

Mercedes-AMG CLS53 hybrid confirmed, headed for Detroit

The boss of Mercedes-AMG has confirmed a hot CLS53 with hybrid technology will debut at the Detroit motor show in January.

Speaking with Autocar at the 2017 Los Angeles motor show, head of AMG, Tobias Moers, said the 53 branding will be stuck on AMG models using petrol-electric hybrid powertrains – in the process hinting that an E53 could follow the CLS.

According to the report, the CLS53 – and likely subsequent AMG 53 models – will feature a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six matched with a 50kW electric motor.

The new CLS450 4Matic (pictured), meanwhile, features a 270kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbo straight six with a 16kw/250Nm mild-hybrid system, helping it sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

With the uprated electric motor, the AMG CLS53 is expected to develop around 429bhp (320kW), which, combined with its increased torque should give it acceleration equivalent to that of the outgoing 430kW/800Nm V8 AMG CLS63 – which hits triple figures from a standstill in a claimed 4.1 seconds.

This announcement confirms rumours that the new-generation CLS range would be headlined by a ’53’ hybrid AMG variant, though it’s still unclear whether a V8-engined AMG 63 version will be offered.

Previous reports have speculated that the AMG 53 variant will leave room for the production version of the four-door ‘AMG GT4‘ sedan, which has been spied on several occasions looking very much like a hotted-up CLS with different tail-lights.

The new model was previewed by the AMG GT concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, which utilised its own hybrid setup – though it teamed the company’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor for a combined power output of “up to 600kW”.

For now, we’ll have to wait until the Detroit motor in January to see what the new AMG CLS53 is all about.

Mercedes-Benz puts autonomous tech to the test in Australia

Mercedes-Benz is putting autonomous technology through testing in Aussie conditions, to better understand some of the quirks of our roads.

Along with more information about the flashing, variable-speed signs becoming prevalent on our highways, the test route – from Sydney to Melbourne, via Canberra and Albury – will also look to hone the way self-driving systems deal with wombats, koalas, emus and kangaroos crossing the road.

As Volvo has already discovered, kangaroos are particularly challenging for self-driving systems. They jump up to 1.5m high and travel at around 60km/h, making them hard to track. There’s also the issue of what to do once the car has detected the obstacle.

Perhaps most interesting, though, will be testing surround the infamous Melbourne ‘hook turn’. Rather than waiting in the right lane, hook turns force drivers to sit in the far-left lane to make their right-hand turn. To successfully deal with this traffic pattern, which is entirely unique, autonomous cars will need to recognise a hook-turn sign, pull into the correct lane and, crucially, only start driving when the traffic lights have changed.

The new Digital Light system will be put to the test while Mercedes-Benz is in Australia, too. Debuted in the F015 Concept in 2015, the system is designed to deliver a crisp, bright beam without dazzling oncoming drivers.

This testing is being undertaken as part of the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent World Drive, being carried out over five continents over five months. The road trip wraps up in Las Vegas, just in time for the start of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Having started in Stuttgart, Mercedes put its cars to the test in Shanghai’s dense traffic, before analysing pedestrian detection in South Africa.

Nissan looking to expand Nismo line-up in Oz

Nissan Australia says it’s keen to expand the range of Nismo performance models offered, which could mean sporty versions of its SUV lineup in the near-future.

Speaking with CarAdvice at the local launch for the 2018 Qashqai, Nissan Australia CEO, Stephen Lester, said the local division is keen to increase its number of Nismo-branded offerings considering our market’s strong take-up of performance vehicles.

What’s exciting from a Nissan perspective is that we’ve recently launched the Nismo brand here, and I would say this is probably more the direction that you would see us go from being able to capture some of that high-performance model influence,” he said.

We’d like to see Nismo expanded throughout the line-up from both a performance feature basis and also from an option and cosmetics standpoint.”

Meanwhile, Lester said the Nismo brand will be kept separate from cosmetic accessory packages – like the recent N-Sport editions of the Juke, X-Trail and Navara.

N-Sport is a way of drawing out a little bit more sporty performance and cosmetic features before you get into full-on Nismo performance packages,” he said.

We will continue in creating special editions, but also supporting further development in Nismo product across the portfolio.”

Currently, the only models available under Nissan’s performance arm are the 370Z and GT-R Nismos, which retail from $61,490 and $299,000 plus on-road costs respectively.

It’s unclear which models are next in line for the Nismo treatment locally, though there is a Sentra (Pulsar) Nismo sold in the States, along with a Nismo version of the Japanese-market Serena people mover.

One candidate is the new Nissan Leaf electric hatchback, which was previewed with a sexy Nismo concept earlier this year (above).

PSA Group wants refund from GM for Opel purchase – report

The PSA Group, parent company of Peugeot and Citroen, is reportedly seeking a refund from General Motors for half the purchase price of Opel.

According to sources who have spoken with Reuters, PSA now understands Opel will significantly exceed the European Union’s 2021 CO2 emissions target for passenger vehicles of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometre — equivalent to 3.6L/100km in diesel cars and 4.1L/100km in petrol vehicles.

PSA is reportedly seeking 600 to 800 million euros ($940 to $1250 million) in compensation from GM, which is around half the purchase price of the 1.3 billion euros ($2 billion).

During the sale negotiations, PSA was led to believe GM’s European operations would miss the mark by a few grams per kilometre. Instead, it now believes Opel will be at least 10g/km over the limit.

If such an situation were to eventuate, PSA’s Opel subsidiary could be liable for up to one billion ($1.6 billion) in fines, as the EU will levy a charge of 95 euros ($149) per gram over the limit for every new vehicle sold.

Multiple sources told Reuters, Opel’s CO2 reduction plan under GM included a larger-than-reasonable proportion of diesel cars, and substantial sales (around 20,000) of the Ampera-e, a rebadged Chevrolet Bolt.

Each Ampera-e was priced at a loss of around 10,000 euros ($15,700) under the General’s stewardship. PSA has since increased prices of the Ampera-e.

It has also halted sales of the electric hatchback in Norway, where the government has cut taxes and fees for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, making it possibly the one place in the world where the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S has ever topped the sales charts.

Earlier this month, PSA celebrated its 100th day in charge of Opel by releasing details about its turnaround plan. In the ‘Pace!’ strategy, Opel will completely move to the PSA Group’s more efficient platforms and drivetrain technologies three years ahead of schedule.

It will also introduce a number of key plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle models it had not originally planned for.

“We became aware a few weeks after we finalised the closing that the company was going to the wall on CO2 emissions,” Carlos Tavares, CEO of the PSA Group told the media at the launch of Opel’s turnaround plan.

Noting the “weight of fines you are hit with can threaten the company’s existence”, Tavares said Opel and PSA had to “completely rebuild the product and technology strategies”.

Reuters understands PSA and GM have had discussions on the matter, but neither side is saying anything officially, and PSA has yet to lodge a formal request about the matter.
