Mazda Australia: Number two and still in ‘growth phase’

Despite being the second-best-selling brand here, Mazda Australia believes it still has the potential to further improve its position in the market.

Speaking to CarAdvice at the Mazda technology forum in Frankfurt this week, the recently appointed boss of Mazda Australia, Vinesh Bhindi, said the outlook for the next five years remains positive for the brand.

“We still see opportunity in a growth phase, most of it is reliant on new products… stuff that will absolutely assist our plan and customer base. At the moment we have access to a very comprehensive product covering from Mazda corporation and good coverage, good line-up.” Bhindi said.

Nonetheless, that growth is also very much market-dependent and not necessarily a result solely of Mazda’s own capabilities.

“It’s not ‘how much more’, it all depends on the market. We believe the market is still going to grow – not at a huge rate, but our experts are calling stable growth for a five year outlook –  but also some of the things Mazda corporation is planning, i think they give us a good opportunity.”

According to Bhindi, the challenges facing the industry are vast and diverse, with both the government focus on automotive as well as potential upcoming CO2 and emission regulations having a substantial impact on the sector.

“In terms of industry challenges, i think the government focus on the industry in recent times is a challenge, but they have managed to make it an industry challenge as opposed to a brand challenge. I think that is going to be evolving and we are absolutely happy to work with the government on whatever needs to change.”

Even so, Bhindi was careful to point out that government intervention was not interfering with the automotive segment.

“I am not sure ‘interfering’ is the word I would use. They have had a review, they will make some findings and then make some recommendations. We will work with the regulators and find what they find challenging and what should be different. We look for guidance from them in what we would like to see happen on an industry level or brand level. It’s not interference.”

As for emission regulations, that potentially could have a larger impact on Mazda as the brand lags behind in the development on hybrid and electric vehicle compared to the likes of Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi.

“Obviously the biggest challenge to industry will be the government’s position on CO2 emissions.”

Bhindi believes that Mazda’s upcoming product with next-generation of SkyActiv will address those concerns in its own unique way, helping “bring things to market before regulators have to make a call on where we need to be.”

Mazda is also hoping there will be some discussion around the fuel quality in Australia.

“91, 95 [RON], I think that’s another challenge in our market, and government position on whether fuel needs to be a bigger focus area and better quality, is something that will become topical, is my feeling.”

Mazda Australia sales are up 2.3 percent to 71,024 units for the first half of this year.

Engineering the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk was a mammoth challenge

Jamie Standring, SRT’s senior manager for powertrain engineering, told CarAdvice there’s a lot more going on under the surface of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk than merely generating bulk power and torque from the supercharged V8 engine.

“Certainly packaging was one of the challenges,” Standring said. “The driveline, in particular, was a challenge because of the 30mm longer transmission.”

You’d think a large SUV like the Grand Cherokee would have more than enough physical space to add a toughened driveline, but, of course, it isn’t quite so simple.

Driving the production car, as we’ve now done at launch, is an interesting experience in sampling the finished product without understanding all the nuances that had to be taken care of in development. Shoehorning a supercharged V8 into an AWD platform wasn’t a complete nightmare for SRT engineers, but it presented unique challenges.

“The other difficult issues are things you can’t specifically analyse [quite] as well,” Standring told CarAdvice. “Transmission case oil temperatures under load, for example. There are no analytical tools that allow you to monitor a fluid-solid interaction.”

In short, Standring means that engineers couldn’t measure what would happen until they tested the driveline under prolonged loads.

“That becomes a development challenge,” Standring said. “You can’t predict it, you run into it headlong during testing and then you have to work it out. In other words, we have to develop our way out of the problem.”

I wondered whether the cooling needs of such a powerful engine would be a challenge during hot weather testing, but the solution, as you’d expect, came from pretty close to home.

“The cooling system in this vehicle, much of it we took from the Dodge Hellcat, and everything was sized appropriately to the engine,” Standring explained. “We basically looked at the entire system, and the brief was to fit it all in the front end of the Jeep.”

Standring went on to explain that the cooling system, therefore, was comparatively easy to negotiate – given the hardware was already proven in another platform.

“It was more about opening enough real estate on the front end to get as much air in as we needed,” he said. “We don’t need foglights, for example, and we gave them up for better airflow. For a higher purpose, so to speak. And the higher purpose in SRT and Powertrain is power.”

The obvious question for endlessly unsatisfied petrolheads, is whether there’s wriggle room for a Demon variant of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, with even more power and torque.

“It would be challenging to make more power than this,” Standring said. “It would be very challenging. We’re pretty much at the limit for half-shaft tolerance, for example, at this point. To do more, we’d have to tear up the rear end of the vehicle.”

It’s not as simple as just adding more power, either. Harnessing it is key. “You’d have to package a bigger axle, bigger half shafts, which is very difficult in this architecture, the suspension architecture in particular is an issue,” Standring said. “Who needs more anyway?”

Well, too much power is never enough, and surely one of you madmen in the SRT skunkworks have thought about it?

“No comment,”Standring says with a laugh.

Australians burn $1.3 billion in petrol each year… just looking for parking

New research shows that Australians are spending a lot of time and money in search of a parking space, and HERE Technologies believes that connected cars will help curb the problem.

A survey of more than 1000 people found that Australians spend, on average, 14 hours per year looking for that elusive perfect parking space. The numbers show that 18- to 24-year-old drivers take more time than any other age group – one in four people in this age group spend 30 minutes and over, per week, trying to find a spot.

Some 30 per cent of participants believe it has become increasingly difficult to find parking spaces in the past year, leading 24 per cent to choose alternative forms of transport, and 25 per cent to avoid driving at all. However, 4 per cent think parking access has improved.

While younger drivers are the pickiest with their parking spots, they’re also the most likely to consider solutions like alternative transport, ride-sharing, or future technology.

More than half of all under-25s surveyed (56 per cent) want an app that directs them to available parking spaces, while almost one in three (31 per cent) want to use internet connected car features to help find free parks.

“Connected car technology can provide information to drivers about parking availability and on-street parking restrictions in real-time and can even estimate how long you’ll need to factor in to find a spot, based on historical data,” said Mark Whitmore, director of HERE Asia Pacific.

“Building greater awareness of on-street parking options not only helps alleviate the stress of locating parking for drivers, it also impacts pedestrians and cities on a wider scale – with limited parking causing more than 30 percent of overall inner city traffic.”

“Just like online banking has eliminated the need to wait in bank queues, the inconvenience of searching for car parks will soon be a relic of the past as fully self-driving cars capable of parking themselves become widely available across Australia in as little as five years,” he added.

Other findings include that the average Australian clocks up an additional 560 kilometres a year at around 40km/h looking for parking spots, burning 59 litres of fuel at an average cost of $70 per person – equating to $1.3 billion.

Here, previously a Nokia subsidiary, was purchased by Audi, BMW and Daimler in 2015 as part of a $4.2 billion deal.

Designer reimagines BMW’s Isetta as the cute bubble car of the future

The BMW Isetta of the 1950s is one of the quirkiest models to come from the Bavarian manufacturer in its 100-year history, and now one independent designer has reimagined the original ‘bubble car’ for the 21st century.

Created by Justin Hyunjung Cho as a ride-sharing solution of the future, the modern-day Isetta mixes the super-compact concept of the original with various design elements of modern BMW models and autonomous driving technology.

Much like the Smart Vision EQ Fortwo concept revealed for the Frankfurt motor show, Cho’s contemporary interpretation of the BMW Isetta is a pocket-sized driverless runabout that would be used as part of an urban ride-sharing service – such as BMW’s own ReachNow.

Along with the Isetta itself, the concept’s styling clearly draws inspiration from the electrified BMW i range, with an array of blue highlights common to the company’s eco-friendly sub-brand, along with an interpretation of the double kidney grille and tail-lights similar to that of the i3 hatch.

Like the original, traditional doors do not feature. Occupants enter through a hatch that doubles as the front windscreen.

The wheels, meanwhile, are hidden behind circular covers that form part of the body – Minority Report, anyone?

Cho has even gone to the effort of mocking up advertising campaigns for the tiny vehicle, one being for the ReachNow ride-sharing service and the other demonstrating the benefits of the Isetta’s tiny dimensions in the city.

We already know that electrification and autonomy are the future of the automotive industry, let’s just hope it turns out to be this cute.

2017 Ford Mustang GT review

It’s very easy to dislike and write off the Ford Mustang. After all, until the updated model arrives, the Mustang’s two-star ANCAP safety rating is entirely unacceptable and should be reason enough not to go near the iconic nameplate.

But… tell that to your grin as you go from first into second and the back steps out ever so slightly to remind you that life is worth living.

The problem with wanting to hate the Mustang is it’s actually a really, really, enjoyable vehicle to drive. Here, you have a two-door, rear-wheel drive, stylish sports car that packs a mighty 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 with 306kW of power and 530Nm of torque. And, it’s available in a manual at around $60,000. If you can find something that offers a similar package for the money, buy it.

From the outside, the Mustang is unmistakably a modern muscle car. It’s not soft, it’s not brutish, but it’s a very well-styled vehicle that carries the Mustang heritage into a new era.

Considering Ford Australia seems to have sold more Mustangs than half of its other models, the Pony car has lost a bit of its appeal due to its popularity. It was only 12 months ago, a yellow or red Mustang would’ve turned heads anywhere it went.  But these days, market saturation has dulled its impact somewhat.

However, much like the Toyota 86 that dominated the affordable sports car market before it, the Mustang’s popularity doesn’t detract from the car’s other appealing characteristics, namely the drivetrain and driving dynamics.

Let’s be brutally honest, the Ford Mustang is not a very competent car when it comes to sharp dynamics and handling. It will have its rear end handed to it on a race track by half-a-dozen 2.0-litre turbocharged Japanese and European cars. And if that’s what you’re after, you’ve missed the point of Ford’s offering. This is a grand tourer; even the name says it – Mustang GT.

This is the type of car you can drive the kids to school in (so long as you’re aware the rear passenger safety rating is well below par for a modern car), go to work, do the shopping and then take it out for a fast drive on the weekend. It doesn’t do any of those things better than other offerings out on the market, but as a package bringing together a sense of visual, audible and emotional excitement, it’s hard to beat.

We took our red V8 Mustang, with the kids aboard, to the All Ford day at Queensland Raceway. It was a challenge to fit the child seats in the back and the angle of the rear seats makes the legroom pretty poor (and also contributes to the poor safety rating).

Nonetheless, we were utterly surprised by the number of, not just other Fords, but Mustangs on display. There is a genuine sense of community around this car – one which we haven’t experienced on this scale since back at the peak of the Subaru WRX days – both in terms of support from other members, but also the endless list of modifications that are now possible.

You’ll need to replace the exhaust, almost immediately post-purchase, with something that generates a bit more noise because as it stands, the standard exhaust system really mutes the mighty naturally-aspirated V8. Ford offers an option, but we recommend just going for one of the well-established aftermarket offerings.

We walked around the horde of Mustangs on display and were wowed by both the body style modifications and also the mechanical upgrades some owners had managed. Needless to say, no Mustang drove into the crowd, though a few ‘Insert Crowd Here’ stickers were seen on front bumpers.

Talking to plenty of Mustang owners, the only complaint we heard was how long they had to wait for their car, to begin with. But, this is no longer as much of an issue given the car’s current safety turmoil and age.

Post the all-Ford day, we took the Mustang for a very comprehensive test drive through mountain ranges, city streets and highways and did our very best to dislike the coupe. It’s not one we should ever recommend, purely for its safety rating alone, but hell, if you have the maturity to make a decision to buy this car knowing its safety limitations, then we salute you, because this is a very, very competent package.

The V8 engine revs freely and, given the exhaust notes we heard from more than a dozen modified Mustangs, it’s an utterly brutal aural experience once released from its factory restriction, one that will force a smile from any car enthusiast.

We found the manual gearbox very rewarding, and although there is also nothing wrong with the automatic, if you can drive stick, it really adds that extra layer to the Mustang lifestyle.

In terms of dynamics, the Mustang shows a heap of body roll around corners and in general feels its 1701kg (tare) weight. It’s a heavy beast and it doesn’t really like corners. But it’s American and without being clichéd, what else is new?

The upside is, the ride is super comfortable and even on Brisbane’s mostly neglected suburban roads, the Mustang never feels unsettled or jarring.

What we love about the Mustang is its tendency to oversteer. In Sports mode, the throttle becomes more responsive and the traction control a little less, well, controlling. The result, especially when the road surface is even remotely damp, is the backend sliding out at every opportunity. This, despite the massive grip offered by the Pirelli P Zero tyres. If you love the oversteering characteristic of an American muscle car, the Mustang will not disappoint.

In Track mode, everything goes yet another step further and the car behaves like an old school muscle car, caring little for your inability to understand the physics of tyres and weight transfer.

We have to thank Track mode for all the hilarious Ford Mustang crash videos available on the Internet. There is something raw and entertaining about a sports car that hands over full control and lets you have some actual fun. But it will bite you, really, really hard, if it can tell you’re a pretender.

The Brembo brake system does a reasonable job of bringing the Mustang to a stop, but the car’s hefty weight will mean the brakes start to fade if you keep on it.

The overall driving experience of a Mustang is currently second-to-none, for both good and bad. It’s a lazy, manual V8 with a propensity for oversteering that can only make you laugh. It’s a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

What’s not so fun is the interior, which is Spartan at best. It’s full of harsh plastics and poor fit and finishes. The way the buttons operate, the tactility of the cabin surfaces, it’s all pretty nasty, though you can argue it’s keeping in tradition with the American muscle car heritage.

The infotainment system is a tad hopeless, too. Look, it works fine and the stereo system pumps out the beats with vigour, but the user interface makes you wonder how an American company, which has access to the world’s best UX designers, has managed to come up with something so unrefined.

There are other annoying aspects of the car; there are too many beeps and warnings just trying to get in and out of the thing and that can get frustrating over time.

Overall, the Ford Mustang is one hell of a car to drive. It brings constant entertainment and joy behind the wheel. It’s the type of car that we would want to own and experience on a constant basis.

In saying that, we can’t recommend you buy a Ford Mustang because of its abysmal safety rating alone, but if you happen to buy one anyway, we won’t tell anyone.

Mazda CX-8 now under consideration for Australia

The recently unveiled Mazda CX-8 has now been made available for the Australian market, with the company’s local arm this week confirming the seven-seat, diesel-only SUV is in its consideration set for 2018.

Speaking to CarAdvice after this week’s Mazda technology forum in Frankfurt, Mazda Australia marketing boss Alastair Doak confirmed availability of the CX-8 for our market.

“So, it’s now our decision whether to sell it in Australia. We have to work out how to position it within our line-up, among other things.” Doak said.

The Mazda CX-8, which was originally said to be intended specifically for the Japanese market, is a more coupe-like version of the CX-9 SUV, but still offers the availability of seven seats.

Even though the CX-8 and CX-9 (the latter outlined in red above) ride on the same 2930mm wheelbase, the CX-8 measures shorter overall: 4900mm to the CX-9’s 5075mm. It is also markedly narrower (1840mm to 1969mm), and does not sit as tall (1730mm to 1747mm).

The CX-8 will also be set apart by its powertrain, which will be a 2.2-litre turbo diesel setup instead of the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol unit the rest of the world gets with the CX-9.

That powertrain differentiation, Doak says, may be its unique selling point and a reason to bring the model here as the Japanese brand currently doesn’t offer a seven-seater diesel option.

“It would give us a diesel seven-seat option – something that we don’t currently have,” he said.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine fitted to the CX-8 overseas is currently in use in the CX-5, with power outputs of 129kW of power and 420Nm of torque, that compares to the CX-9’s petrol unit delivering 170kW and 420Nm.

Even so, Doak admits that any decision on the CX-8 remains “more than 12 months away”.

Smart Vision EQ Fortwo revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut

Just days after being teased on social media, the Smart Vision EQ Fortwo concept has been revealed ahead of the Frankfurt motor show.

Launching under parent Mercedes-Benz’s new ‘EQ’ electric sub-brand, the Smart Vision EQ Fortwo show car measures a diminutive 2699mm long, 1720mm wide and 1535mm tall, and potentially previews the next-generation of the urban carmaker’s smallest model, the Fortwo.

The vehicle is envisioned as a future solution for urban public transport, picking up passengers directly from their chosen location while generating zero emissions from its all-electric powertrain.

Up front is a 44-inch ‘Black Panel Grille’ that displays messages to help users recognise it is “their” vehicle, while projection-friendly surfaces on the sides allows “unprecedented individualisation” of the vehicle, which Smart says makes it ideal for ride-sharing services.

Inside, the Smart Vision EQ Fortwo concept is the first of the Daimler Group’s vehicles to forgo a steering wheel and pedals, with vehicle functions controlled via a personal mobile device or voice inputs.

The company says by dispensing with the traditional vehicle controls, the vehicle appear more spacious, as does the white interior colour scheme. At the centre of the dashboard is a 24-inch display finished with a rose-gold-coloured frame, flanked by two additional 4.0-inch displays that can be used for simple messages like “hello” and “welcome”.

Other interior highlights include man-made leather trim, a wide lounge-like bench seat with room for two passengers – which also sports a retractable centre armrest – along with numerous stowage cubbies under the seat and on the floor.

Another space-saving method is seen in the side doors, which pivot in a wing-like opening over the rear axles to make access easier while also creating visual flair. The door design also reduces the danger of colliding with cyclists and pedestrians.

“The smart vision EQ fortwo is our vision of future urban mobility; it is the most radical car sharing concept car of all: fully autonomous, with maximum communication capabilities, friendly, comprehensively personalisable and, of course, electric,” said Annette Winkler, Smart’s CEO.

“With the smart vision EQ fortwo, we are giving a face to the themes with which Mercedes-Benz Cars describes the vision of future mobility within the CASE strategy.”

The CASE strategy that Winkler references is Daimler and Mercedes-Benz’s strategy for future mobility – Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Services and Electric.
